As an open-core business, maintaining a balance between the two is critical to the company’s success: almost every one of our customer relationships began with a positive open-source user experience. As the company grows, the opportunities we have to interact with our users throughout their lifecycle -- from awareness to acquisition to activation to retention -- multiply. This is especially true because of the unique leverage we have through our open-source products, which routinely reach 100x as many users as our commercial offerings. As both our open-source and commercial products mature, it is imperative to maintain that strategic balance in order to create a feedback loop: open-source users may become commercial champions, who in turn help Prefect software remain the new standard for dataflow automation. We are very excited that our company’s success necessitates hiring someone who is solely responsible for managing that growth.

Role Summary: 

The Head of Growth will be in charge of scaling Prefect’s growth across both our open-source and commercial businesses. As part of this effort, you will be responsible for the strategy and processes that govern Prefect’s interactions with third parties, from prospective users to channel partners. You will oversee the entire customer lifecycle, from open-source awareness to enterprise champions. One of your core responsibilities will be maintaining the balance between Prefect’s open-source and commercial efforts. As such, the success of this role will depend not only on traditional growth metrics like revenue, retention, and customer satisfaction; but also open-source metrics like community growth and engagement, network strength, and downloads.

However, this is just the beginning!

You’ll sit at the intersection of many of Prefect’s business units, directly overseeing customer-facing teams, working hand-in-hand with our CTO and open-source evangelists, and working closely with the CEO to align product and growth strategies. While the responsibilities listed below will be the core of your job, we are looking for a high-performing individual who will take initiative, proactively solve new problems, and create their own career path with us.

What you’ll be doing (core responsibilities): 

  • Expand Prefect’s footprint by creating ecosystem partnerships 

  • Develop open-source partnerships to establish Prefect as the new standard for dataflow automation and create a competitive moat

  • Develop and maintain value-add relationships and partnerships to distribute of Prefect products and drive strategic revenue

  • Oversee Prefect’s sales and customer experience teams

  • Work closely with the CEO and CTO to build the feedback loops that ensure the joint success of Prefect’s open-source and commercial businesses

  • Measure business performance and develop growth metrics

  • Act as a strategic partner to product and engineering leaders to prioritize opportunities and increase user retention

  • Drive open-source growth through a combination of increased awareness, ease of access, evangelism, distribution, or other unconventional methods

  • Analyze and understand user behavior to find high-ROI opportunities, including working with documentation and engineering teams to minimize time-to-value for new users

  • Increase our understanding of the open-source-to-commercial funnel, resulting in better sales leads and more informed commercial decisions

  • Establish Prefect’s value proposition through user feedback, case studies, and demonstrations

  • Identify the most promising markets for Prefect to target

  • Engage with and expand the Prefect Advisory Board

  • Communicate strategic vision, mission, and objectives to stakeholders

  • Manage and appropriately escalate any issues, risks, or blocks that could compromise Prefect from a competitive, ecosystem, or commercial standpoint

  • Contribute to and help maintain a high-performing and winning culture

Qualifications (you must have):

  • Experience developing strategic business partnerships

  • Experience with software sales, especially SaaS or enterprise

  • Experience working with open-source or open-core products

  • Ability and desire to roll up your sleeves

  • Strong people management skills

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Strong listening skills and the ability to effectively communicate with the team, senior management, and C-level executives

  • Strong work ethic, high energy, and a team player

About you (we’d like you to have):

  • Experience in a start-up or high-growth environment 

  • 5-10 years’ experience in sales, business development, or developer evangelism

  • Demonstrated track record as a coach or developer of skills

  • Comfort communicating with highly technical products and customers

  • Excellent judgement and analytical ability

  • Knowledge of software development best practices

  • … and an understanding of how and when to “break the mold” when the best practice for Prefect deviates from an industry standard

  • Strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability
